Malnutrition in the OIC Member

Countries: A Trap for Poverty

COMCEC

Anaemia

Figure 10: Prevalence ofAnaemia in OICand Non-OIC Countries, 1990 /94 - 2010 /16

Source: Authors' calculations based on theJoint Malnutrition Estimatesfrom UNICEF, WHOand the World Bank

(2016).

The prevalence of anaemia is substantially higher in OIC countries than in non-OIC countries

over the whole period

(Figure 10).

Starting from an initial rate of 61% of children under the

age of five being anaemic, the prevalence rate continually decreased in the last 20 years but

still remains very high: close to half of the children (48.5%) in the OIC were anaemic over the

period 2010/16. In the non-OIC world, the prevalence of anaemia went down from 42% to

35% over the same period.

The levels and trends of anaemia are very similar when the sample is restricted to developing

countries

(Figure 11).
