In order to see how competitive the banking system among OIC member countries, bank
concentration measure, Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI), can be used. Box 1 explains how to
estimate HHI. The lower values indicate lower concentration and hence higher competition.
Bangladesh has lowest concentration ratio among OIC member countries. Among countries of
the top five banking system in terms of total assets in 2014, three of them, Indonesia, Malaysia
and Turkey, show up in the countries of the lowest 10 HHI (Figure 2).
