Improving Agricultural Statistics in the COMCEC Region

85

Data Collection:

For cereals and other crops (pulses, industrial crops, oil seeds, tuber crops,

fodder crops, orchards, vineyard and vegetables) data on areas and production are based on

expert estimates. Data is collected through the District Directorates of MFAL. Agricultural

technicians appointed at MFAL District Directorates estimate crops and crop production using

information collected from various local sources (interviews with farmers and agricultural

chambers, MFAL records, etc.), and organize regular field trips to the villages within their

districts. For this purpose, the Statistical Data Network (SDN), a web based data system for

data collection, was established by MFAL. MFAL enters data into SDN system and data is jointly

analysed by MFAL and TurkStat, and then published by TurkStat. Data estimations on the crop

production are made three times in a year in May, October and December. Moreover,

administrative records are kept by local MFAL offices for organic farming, pesticide and

fertilizer use at the provincial level. The consistency check of the data entered is conducted

using the SAS (Statistical Analysis System) programme, which is available at TurkStat.

66

Statistical data on the number of livestock is collected annually by the Province and District

Directorates of MFAL through the SDN system. Meat, milk, egg and poultry data are collected

by TurkStat Regional Offices from the integrated establishments on a monthly basis and data

entered by authorized staff from TurkStat Regional Office into a web-based system.

67

Since 2010, the output and input agricultural products prices are collected through the use of a

web-based programme supervised by TurkStat and into which MFAL staffs feeds the data.

Annual agricultural surveys (wage and fishery) are conducted by TurkStat, whereby the data is

mostly collected in the form of questionnaires and then entered into a web-based system

developed by TurkStat.

The results of all the various surveys are stored on a server. Information and communication

technologies are used in the collection, processing and dissemination of data.
